Fertilizing Tips
Do you know when to fertilize your lawn? Do
you know what type of fertilizer to use or how to best apply it? We will
give you some tips on lawn fertilizer.
Fertilizer
Application: Use a rotary type spreader for applying
fertilizer. It will more evenly spread the fertilizer. Apply half in one
direction and half in the opposite direction. For example apply half of
the fertilizer walking North to South and half walking from East to West.
Apply the fertilizer to the grass when it is dry and then water well
afterwards (except when using weed & feed).
When To Apply
Fertilizer: For warm season grass, fertilize beginning in early
spring until late summer. You can also apply a winterizer in the early
fall. For cool season grasses, fertilize mainly in the early fall.
What Type Of
Fertilizer To Use: Ever wonder what the numbers on the bag of
fertilizer mean. Well the first number is the percent of nitrogen in the
bag. The second number is the percent of Phosphorus in the bag and the
third number is the percentage of Potassium in the bag. So a bag marked
10-2-2 would be 10% Nitrogen, 2% Phosphorus and 2 % Potassium.
Generally speaking, you will want a fertilizer with more Nitrogen content.
For best results ask a specialist at your local garden supply store for a
recommendation.
How Much Fertilizer
To Apply: Walk off your yard to determine how many square feet
you have. Follow the directions on the fertilizer you purchased as to how
much to apply for your square footage. Applying too much is not always
better. It can lead to environmentally dangerous runoff problems and can
even damage your lawn.
