Hot Composting
Hot composting is the quickest method of
composting although it also involves the most work. This article will go
over the steps involved in Hot Composting.
Step 1
Choose your site and build your compost bin. Pick an area that
drains well and is near your garden. You can either build your own bin or
purchase one at a local garden center.
Step2
Start filling your compost bin. Try to use equal amounts of high carbon
(leaves, twigs, etc) and high nitrogen (grass clipping, manure) materials.
Mix the two components together and add a little soil to help kick start
the decomposition.
Step 3
You need to keep the pile moist. Water your compost pile every so often
but be sure not to over water it. If the pile is too wet, aerobic bacteria
will not be able to decompose it properly.
Step 4
To aerate the pile, punch holes in the side of the pile. The center of the
pile will begin heating up. Turn the pile when the center reaches about
140 degrees. You can determine the temperature by using your hand to see
if the center is hot to the touch. You can also buy a thermometer designed
for compost piles from the garden store.
Step 5
Check the pile at least every other day to make sure that enough moisture
and air is getting into the pile. Turn the pile at least every other week
but not more often than every other day. Move material from the center of
the pile to the outside of the pile.
