Vermicomposting
Vermicomposting is a method of composting in a
bin with worms. It is a good way to compost year round and is an excellent
way for people without large yards to compost. This article will explain
how to compost with worms.
Step 1
Find a plastic storage bin. You do not need an overly large bin, around 2
feet by 2 feet by 2 feet deep should do.
Step 2
Drill a dozen quarter inch holes in the bottom of the container for
drainage.
Step 3
Place nylon mesh in the bottom of the container. This is to keep worms
from escaping the bin.
Step 4
Place a tray underneath the bin to catch drainage.
Step 5
Add bedding to the container. Shred newspaper and moisten it. Place the
newspaper on one side of the bin. You can also use cut up cardboard
cartons, shredded computer paper, leaves or peat moss.
Step 6
Add the worms to your bin. You can buy redworms at some garden centers or
you should be able to order them online. You also may be able to find them
in your garden.
Step 7
Add food waste to the side of the bin with the newspaper. Use vegetable
peelings, fruit scraps, coffee grounds, eggshells, bread and similar
foods. Do not add meat or dairy products. Also be careful not to add too
much material at once, start it off slow.
Step 8
Store your bin in an out of the way dark location away from high
temperatures. The worms should compost the material in about 2 or 3
months.
Step 9
Add fresh moist newspaper to the other side of the bin and add more food
waste. The worms will switch to the new food source.
To use the compost, open the bin up and expose
it to bright light. The light will cause the worms to burrow down in the
container and you can scoop out your compost.
